How many times do we think to ourselves that we need to work to make a living? Often, we feel the resentment of knowing that we are not in charge or control of our working environment. The Gallup State of the American Workplace report reveals that almost 70% of employees are disengaged at work or not engaged at all. Simply put, they are just there.

Ever since Colin Heaney was 13 years old, he knew that a 9–5 job was not for him. And from then, he has taken a path less traveled. Colin knows what it takes to go the entrepreneurship route from dropping out of high-school and trying multiple gigs to now running a social media agency that is rapidly growing. As an entrepreneur, Colin focuses on adding value to others. He is also training hundreds of other young entrepreneurs to achieve the same success as him.

Below, Colin shares his insights on shifting from an employee to an entrepreneur and living your purpose.

The first step is always the toughest

Entrepreneurship is about taking bold steps towards achieving things that you believe are possible. While many people may consider having education as the key to starting a successful career, you will not get anywhere without a clear vision of what you want to do. Colin notes that focusing on gaining the necessary skills to succeed in running a business is crucial. That way, you can identify opportunities faster and work on them.

Be ready to fail

The path of entrepreneurship is not a smooth one. Sometimes, you will struggle and even doubt yourself. One thing to always keep in mind is that failures are nothing but lessons. To this point, Colin has overcome many failures in business. He says, ‘Failure is my best teacher.’ Colin has learned to love failure with a passion. He notes that ‘every time he failed, it brought him one step closer to success.’ Moving from an employee to an entrepreneur requires continually learning and adapting as you chase your dreams.

Networking with like-minded individuals

One key thing to always keep in mind is that your network is your net worth. As you venture into entrepreneurship, networking with like-minded individuals is crucial to help you steer in the right direction. Colin reckons that it is vital to network with people living the life you want to live. Lastly, never stop connecting with people daily.
